Making reasonable adjustments to create a communication friendly environment can make a significant difference for pupils with SLCN. The following ideas should be considered:
- Provide a calm, structured, communication friendly environment. You can screen your learning environment here.
- Provide a language rich environment – use word mats and display pictures and words linked to the topics being taught.
- Use visual timetables and organisational planners/calendars within the classroom.
- Remove distractions - children will be more able to focus if the noise level is low and distractions are kept to a minimum.
- Letters/information sent to parents informing them of what the children will be learning with associated key vocabulary.
