What are we doing to improve air quality?

Solihull Council are committed to improving air quality across the borough.

Our commitment to improve air quality was first set out in our first Clean Air Strategy (2019-2024), we have recently provided an update through our Air Quality Strategy (2024-2028). Our objectives cover the actions we will take to achieve a cleaner environment.

Our objectives and progress

  1. Improving our approach to air quality monitoring.
  2. Leading by example, influencing others whilst protecting our environment and minimising our own emissions.
  3. Raising awareness, providing quality information and guidance to members of the public.
  4. Supporting Schools & Businesses, promoting initiatives to reduce air pollution.
  5. Managing emissions from developments and buildings
  6. Cleaner road, rail and air transport.

We have started to achieve these objectives by:

  • Raising awareness of the processes that can contribute to indoor air pollution such as wood burning stoves and indoor fires.
  • Launching campaigns to encourage people to turn their engines off when their cars are stationary.

Strategies, policies and reports

We have various strategies and reports that are linked to our commitment to improve air quality:

  • Our Air quality Strategy covers our objectives for the period of 2024 -2028
  • The Consultation report provides a summary of the responses of residents and workers to the draft strategy
  • The Annual status report is produced annually to show the progress we have made against our air quality objectives
  • Our Transport strategy details how and why people travel in Solihull and sets out what we are intending to do to improve travel and transport in the Borough.
