A Civic Service to Remember: Honouring Tradition, Embracing the Future of ‘Our Solihull’

It is with gratitude and emotion that I reflect on the recent Mayoral Civic Service. It was a truly remarkable event that wove together our rich traditions with the forward-looking spirit of our community. This service was more than just a celebration: it was a heartfelt expression of who we are as a borough and what we aspire to be.

I cannot begin to thank all those who were instrumental in bringing this service to life - from the dedicated staff at the Civic to those at St. Alphege Church. Special thanks go to Revd Nick Parker, Priest in Charge of Solihull Parish, who officiated with grace, and the Revd Paul Day, Vicar of Shirley and Mayor’s Chaplain, whose powerful sermon resonated deeply with all present. Their leadership, coupled with the presence of everyone who attended, created a space that was not only ancient and sacred but also warm, welcoming, and inclusive.

The year 2024 holds a unique place in the heart of our borough, marking 70 years of the Mayoralty, 60 years since Solihull became a County Borough, and 50 years as a Metropolitan Borough. These milestones are not just dates on a calendar; they are chapters in the living history of Solihull, reminding us of our shared journey. As we honour the past, we also embrace the future, filled with opportunities and challenges that we will meet together.

In Solihull, tradition and modernity walk hand in hand, reflecting the values of inclusivity and progress that define us. What we create together today - through our collective actions, our shared spaces, and our commitment to one another - will shape the Solihull of tomorrow. It is our duty and our privilege to ensure that future generations inherit a borough that remains a beacon of warmth, welcome, and opportunity for all who reside here.

For those unable to join us, I am pleased to share the details of the service, inviting you to reflect on them at your leisure. Additionally, I hope you find joy in the beautifully crafted video by the talented videographer and artist Salman, which captures the essence of this special occasion. The service was elevated by an eclectic mix of music, including the anthem "Locus iste" in Latin performed by the St. Alphege choir and a soul-stirring rendition of "Ya Elahi" by Mikael Mala in Arabic. The inclusion of verses by Qari Amr El Elaimy from the Quran and the verses of the Bible by Revd Sue Chandler were poignant reminders of our shared values of light, unity, and harmony.

As we look to the future, may this service inspire us to continue building a Solihull where tradition and modernity coexist, where inclusivity is not just a word but a lived experience, and where every individual feels valued and at home.

This is our Solihull - a place of belonging, a place of welcome, a place for all.
