Christmas message from the Mayor of Solihull 2024

As Christmas approaches and the year draws to a close, this is a special time for reflection, celebration, and coming together as a community.

Serving as your Mayor over the past six months has been the greatest honour of my life. Being the first citizen of our wonderful borough has allowed me to witness first-hand the vibrant community spirit that defines Solihull - a culturally rich and diverse place I am so proud to call home.

This journey has been full of memorable moments that highlight the heart and soul of our borough.

I have been privileged to support vital community initiatives, such as the installation of a life-saving defibrillator at Elmdon Church and the inspiring work of the Solihull Parish knitted poppy appeal at St Alphege Church. Our borough’s young people have amazed me with their enthusiasm and ingenuity during their school council debates, the Greener School Awards, and the model COP29 simulation in the Council chamber. Their passion for making a difference gives me great hope for the future.

I have had the absolute pleasure of welcoming learners from all walks of life to the Mayor’s Parlour. Each visit has been a powerful reminder that we are all different learners, with unique strengths and stories to share. I have been inspired by their enthusiasm, curiosity, and openness.

The Mayor's Parlour has been a place of heartfelt connections, where the joy of conversation flows freely - whether it's the wide-eyed curiosity of a four-year-old, eager to explore the world, or the wisdom of a 95-year-old, sharing the stories of her rich history. The tinkling of teacups and the gentle crunch of biscuits have set the tone for a welcoming atmosphere, filled with laughter, learning, and a true sense of community.

Every conversation, every moment, has been a reminder of the warmth and diversity that makes our borough so special.

The generosity and dedication of our community never cease to amaze me. From supporting individuals facing menopause or bereavement, to celebrating milestones like the Samaritans’ 50th anniversary and the Soroptimists' continued efforts in raising awareness, I have witnessed countless acts of kindness. Volunteer organisations like Age UK Solihull, which tirelessly support isolated residents, embody the very best of human spirit.

There have been lighter moments too - sharing laughter on the way to an epic performance by the Solihull Choral Society, who lifted me several notes higher with their passion, and listening to brass bands playing the iconic Bond theme tunes. I was also deeply honoured to welcome HRH Princess Anne to Solihull, a visit filled with inspiration and gratitude.

The Civic Honours Awards showcased the extraordinary contributions of our community leaders, groups, businesses, and organisations. I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all the businesses in our borough whose hard work and innovation not only sustain our economy but also create jobs and opportunities for so many residents.

As we reflect on these accomplishments, we also acknowledge the unsung heroes who continue their work throughout the year, particularly during the festive period.

To those who will work tirelessly to keep our essential services running, I offer my heartfelt gratitude. This includes the dedication of our Council staff, whose tireless efforts serve the borough in so many ways. Special thanks must also go to our blue light services, whose bravery and commitment keep our borough safe, and to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who continue to provide care and support during some of life’s most challenging moments. Your efforts embody the unity and hope that resonate so strongly at this time of year.

As we come together with our families and friends, let us also take a moment to remember those who have faced challenges or loss this year, and those for whom the festive season may be a difficult time. We stand in solidarity with all those affected by global conflicts, both within our borough and around the world. Our thoughts are with those in the Middle East, Sudan, Ukraine, and other regions facing turmoil - may they find peace, strength, and comfort in the days ahead.

Looking forward to the rest of my term as Mayor, I am excited about the opportunities to continue celebrating our achievements, addressing our challenges, and strengthening the bonds that make Solihull such a special place - a place of promise and possibility.

Wishing each one of you a happy, peaceful, and restful Christmas, filled with joy and surrounded by those you hold dear. May the New Year bring hope, prosperity, and unity to us all.

With warmest regards,

Cllr Shahin Ashraf, MBE
