Bulky waste collection terms and conditions

Solihull provides a chargeable bulky waste collection service. Details of the fees for the service can be found at Book a bulky collection | solihull.gov.uk.

By using this service to dispose of your unwanted items you will be fulfilling your obligations under the Householder Duty of Care for waste. More detail on Householder Duty of Care and your responsibilities can be found at Your duty to dispose of waste responsibly | solihull.gov.uk.

The terms and conditions applicable to the delivery of the bulky waste collection service are providing in the following sections:

  • On the day of your booking, your items must be outside your property awaiting collection by 8.00am. They need to be as near to the roadside as possible, and should be clearly seen from the road and easily accessible for the collection vehicle. Please note the earliest items can be presented is the evening before collection.
  • If you are placing out black bags to ensure that we keep you and our crews safe please ensure that these are double bagged and do not contain unacceptable items (such as hazardous waste). Black bags, need to be a standard refuse sack size, we will not accept waste in wheelie bin liner bags (100 litres and above) Please note that we will only accept up to 10 black bags per a booked bulky waste collection. 
  • If an item comes apart, then each separate piece is classed as one item - for example a corner sofa that comes apart into two sections would be two items.
  • If access is required through gates, they should be left unlocked, dogs should be kept inside the property and parked cars should not obstruct access to your items.
  • Items that can get heavy when wet (e.g. a mattress)should be kept dry to ensure that the collection crew can remove them. Please only present these items on the day of collection to reduce the amount of time that these items are outside. Items can also be covered with plastic sheets or tarpaulin to try and keep them dry. 
  • All food should be removed from fridge/freezers and the doors should be taped shut.
  • items such as carpets or broken furniture must be rolled, securely tied or bundled together and doors taped shut.
  • Items for collection should not be filled with other rubbish.
  • You do not have to be home when we collect your items.
  • Large items should be dismantled and bundled before collection e.g. play equipment swings/slides.
  • We reserve the right to refuse to collect items measuring in excess of 2.0metres (6ft 6in).
  • We reserve the right to leave excessively heavy items that cannot be safely lifted by two people (items in excess of 50kg).
  • If an item is too big or too heavy for us to safely remove you will not receive a refund.
  • Bulky waste collections are provided for the collection of household waste only - the service is not available to landlords clearing rented properties as this is classed as commercial waste and alternative disposal arrangements should be made. This also applies to property developers who will also need to seek alternative arrangements to dispose of their waste.
  • Only the items listed on your booking will be collected - we will not collect any extra items or different items.
  • We will collect a maximum of ten black bags of household waste per collection. The black bags must not contain unacceptable items (such as hazardous waste) and must be double bagged. Black bags, need to be a standard refuse sack size, we will not accept waste in wheelie bin liner bags (100 litres and above)
  • One roll of underlay/carpet is classed as one item and each roll needs to be added as a separate item.
  • We may send someone to inspect your items before your collection and if considered unsuitable, reserve the right to refuse a collection.
  • If the items are not available on the day of collection, we will leave you a card telling you that we have called. We will be unable to return and you will not be eligible for a refund and will need to pay again if a collection is still required. If your items are not out for collection or are different to the items you have paid for we may take photographs as evidence.
  • We do not go into back gardens to collect items nor do we collect from gated alleyways.
  • We will not collect commercial waste or business waste or collect from commercial or business premises.
  • We will not dismantle furniture, disconnect cookers (or other household furniture) or remove loose waste.
  • We do not collect items from inside properties, garages or garden sheds.
  • We will not carry items up or down steps.
  • We cannot tell you your exact collection time.
  • We do not offer a house clearance service.
  • We will not collect more than 10 items per visit.
  • We will not collect more than 10 black bags per visit.
  • To change or add items to your booking please call 0121 704 8000 by midday on the last working day before your booking.
  • Adding items to your booking may result in an extra charge based on the number of items:
    • Collection of 1 item - £22.50
    • Between 2-5 items - £33.50
    • Between 6-10 items - £45.00
  • If you need to cancel your booking please call 0121 704 8000 by midday on the last working day before your collection.
  • Any cancellations after midday on the last working day before your collection are not eligible for a refund.

Items should be left clearly visible and accessible for collection. 

If we have not collected your item/s, you can report this within 2 working days of the booked collection date. 

If missed items are reported later than this, then we may not be able to return to collect these and you may have to pay again. 
 

  • We will not provide a refund if your items are collected by someone else (such as scrap collectors).
  • While every effort will be made to collect your items there may be occasions where your booking is delayed due to special circumstances (such as snow). If this happens we will arrange to collect your items on the earliest available date but will not provide a refund.
  • We reserve the right to leave excessively heavy items that cannot be safely lifted and manoeuvred by the two man team. If an item is considered too heavy to lift it will not be taken and no refund will be provided.

If you are buying new white goods (such as fridges and freezers or even large items of furniture) speak to the company you are purchasing from and see if they can remove your old item. Sometimes this will be provided free of charge and other times they may charge a small fee.

  • We reserve the right to make reasonable amendments to these terms and conditions. Notification of the amendments will be noted on our website.
