Councillor allowances

Each councillor receives a basic allowance. The allowance is the same for every councillor and its purpose is to recognise the time commitment of councillors and to cover related expenses.

Some councillors who take on extra duties, such as cabinet members or committee chairmen, also receive a special responsibility allowance.

The rates of allowance are based on recommendations from an independent panel that has no connection with the Council.

Members' Allowances 2025/26

The Independent Remuneration Panel report (March 2025) and the Allowances Scheme 2025/26 were approved by the Council on Tuesday 8 April 2025.

Allowances paid

The Mayoral allowance

The net Mayoral Allowance for the Civic Year 2024/25 is £16,604.80 and £1,092.73 for the Deputy Mayor.

To arrive at the above allowances we process a gross figure that is subject to PAYE and National Insurance deductions to bring the net allowance payable to the figures detailed above.

Expenditure of the allowance is at the discretion of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Allowances from Other Authorities

Some of our Councillors also receive allowances from other bodies on which they represent the Council. These include the West Midlands Combined Authority, the West Midlands Fire & Rescue Authority and Solihull Community Housing
