A local walking group - Solihull’s Striders and Strollers – has celebrated 20 years of walks with a special awards event at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, attended by the Mayor of Solihull.
The event was held as a thank you to Brian Williams (84), who led the first Striders and Strollers Solihull walk 20 years ago on 11 September 2001. The walks continue to be popular to this day and he has developed a variety of routes using his excellent knowledge of the area.
The celebration included a presentation of awards to Brian Williams and other walk leaders, Bernard Shaw and John Bullock.
Councillor Ken Meeson, Mayor of Solihull said:
“It was lovely to celebrate Brian’s achievements and dedication to walking, appreciating the local environment, and bringing people together. It was a joy to see everyone who came to express their thanks to Brian and look back on 20 years of Striders and Strollers.
Striders and Strollers is now a local walking programme run by volunteer walk leaders and is supported by Solihull Active, which helps residents lead a more active lifestyle.
There are now 13 Striders and Strollers walks across the borough - which give people the opportunity to appreciate and explore their local surroundings and environments. They are suitable for different levels of walking abilities, are free to attend and are great for anyone looking to improve their health and meet new people.”
Brian Williams added:
“I started walking to keep fit and explore Solihull’s natural environment. I am proud of how far Striders and Strollers has come and am grateful to everyone who has joined the walks over the years. It was lovely to be recognised in this way and I hope that it inspires more people to walk and stay active.”
