As Christmas rapidly approaches, it is an important time to reflect on the past year and our hopes for the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Mayor so far, it has been 37 years since I last held the position, and returning to the role this year has been a particular honour. Solihull is a truly wonderful place to call home and holds a special place in my heart. I feel truly privileged to represent you all as Mayor.
As the colder months continue, I encourage all residents to check-in on their loved ones, friends, and neighbours, especially those who are older or who have existing health conditions. It's this community spirit that so many Solihull volunteers demonstrate to support people less fortunate or who simply need support of others. Throughout the year, I have met with dedicated individuals and groups who are working to improve the lives of others. We are lucky to be surrounded by such a caring community, and I’m deeply grateful for them.
It is a difficult time for many families and communities in Solihull, whose loved ones are suffering through conflicts across the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are both directly and indirectly affected by conflict.
We are fortunate to benefit from a breadth of diverse cultures here in Solihull, and I have had opportunities to participate in many cultural celebrations with residents over the past months. What these events have underlined to me is the mutual respect that different religions have for one another. I have witnessed people from many religious backgrounds and beliefs celebrating together – very heart-warming indeed.
2024 will soon begin, and won’t be without its challenges for everyone, though there may be many new things to be grateful for and celebrate. I am looking forward to welcoming my guests to the Mayor’s Charity Ball in April, to be held for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. The charity ball also coincides with 70 years of the Mayoral role in Solihull and will raise much-needed funds for my charities. Marie Curie Hospice and British Heart Foundation are my chosen charitable causes, both of whom tirelessly dedicate themselves to those in need. We hope the ball, along with other fundraising events, will raise substantial funds to help them continue their essential work.
I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Councillor Mrs Diana Holl-Allen MBE, Mayor of Solihull
