Solihull Council is running a four-week consultation about its ‘Local List of Heritage Assets’ and how buildings, places, landscapes, monuments and archaeological remains should be nominated and assessed for inclusion on the list.
Local planning authorities have the option of keeping a ‘Local List of Heritage Assets’ and Solihull Council has done so since 1982. This is a list of assets that are important to our heritage but that are not formally designated like listed buildings or scheduled monuments. There are currently 229 assets on Solihull’s list which helps to promote the conservation and appreciation of local heritage. It is also considered in planning decisions.
The purpose of the consultation is to ask for views on the proposed criteria and check that the council hasn’t missed anything. It also asks who else we should consult with. There are just six questions and people can write as much or as little as they would like.
A 4-week consultation survey on the draft strategy is now available to complete on the Council’s engagement platform “Your Voice Solihull” and will be open for submissions until 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.
Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Planning, Cllr Andy Mackiewicz said: “The Local List helps local communities and the council to jointly decide which local heritage assets warrant protection in the planning system. It also helps us to work together with community representatives and organisations that are interested in the historic environment to understand and celebrate the historic significance of buildings and places in order to conserve them for future generations.
“The draft selection criteria for additions to the list and draft nominations form set out how we plan to assess these assets in the future – so it’s really important that anyone with an interest in local history and local heritage helps us get it right by taking part in the consultation.”

Please note – this is a consultation about the nature of the Local List and what should be considered in the nomination form. It is not for nominating an asset. If you would like to nominate a heritage asset for addition to the Local List, please email that separately using these draft criteria and form as guidance to HeritageAssets@solihull.gov.uk
