The Mayor of Solihull visited the St Alphege Church knitted poppy installation earlier this week to commemorate this year’s Remembrance Day.
The Mayor joined the knitted and crocheted poppy appeal in July this year, calling for creative and crafty volunteers from across the borough to help make a very special display. The finished installation is now available to see at the entrance of St Alphege Church in Solihull town centre.
This knitted poppy installation is one of many displays across the borough that have been created to bring local communities together to mark Remembrance Day. On Sunday 10 November, events will be taking place all over Solihull, including a number of local Remembrance Sunday services and precessions.
A full list of events is available to view below, and a list of road closures to accommodate the precessions is available to view on the Council website.
Another way residents can show their support and solidarity is by filling in a Remembrance Card, to honour a loved one who served in the Armed Forces. Complete a Remembrance Card and return it to the Core Library in person, by email (heritage@solihull.gov.uk), or online on the Solihull Life website for inclusion in the commemorative display, which will be available to view at the Core Library from Tuesday 5 November until Saturday 16 November.
The Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Shahin Ashraf MBE, said:
“It is heartening to see so many displays of support and solidarity around Solihull for this year’s Remembrance Day. With our beautiful knitted poppy installations throughout the borough, the Core’s Remembrance Card display and Artie, our own paper mâché soldier sitting in the Council’s Civic Suite reception, everyone has a space in the local community to pause and take a moment to remember the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces.
“Many local precessions and tributes will be taking place on Sunday 10 November so please be mindful of the road closures in place on that day. I encourage everyone in the borough to take the opportunity to reflect on Remembrance Day, honouring those who served us and those who continue to serve the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.”
