The Solihull Apprenticeship Show connected young people with employers and training providers to learn about local opportunities.
The free event took place on Wednesday 7 February at North Solihull Sports Centre and attracted over 1,000 visitors. Apprenticeships at all levels and entry level work opportunities showcased the variety of career pathways young people can explore.
A range of employers and training providers across various sectors including construction, digital, creative, engineering and business services were on hand to talk to visitors. Exhibitors included Solihull College & University Centre, JLR, Graham, Severn Trent, Deloitte, DHL, Creative Alliance and Solihull Council. Current apprentices shared their experiences with the visitors.
The Deputy Mayor of Solihull, Cllr Ken Meeson, said:
“I was delighted to attend the Solihull Apprenticeship Show which was a great opportunity for young people, parents and carers to start planning for the future.
“It was great to see that everyone was very excited to find out more about the employment and training opportunities that are available locally. I’d like to thank all the companies and organisations who took part and the staff who organised such a successful event.”
Cllr Ian Courts, Leader of Solihull Council, said:
“Tackling youth unemployment has always been one of our most important challenges and something that I’ve championed repeatedly. It is important to make young people aware of the opportunities on offer and an event like this is perfect to do just that.
“It was great that so many young people were able to learn about the opportunities offered by employers such as Tarmac and Balfour Beatty Vinci, as well as ourselves, of course.”
Cllr Karen Grinsell, Deputy Leader of Solihull Council, said:
“Young people are at the heart of all we do. While apprenticeships are a great alternative for further education, we encouraged exhibitors to also showcase entry level work opportunities. The Solihull Apprenticeship Show enabled young people to talk to those who can really help them make that decision.
“It was encouraging to know that so many residents were able to join us. Our Employment and Skills Team were also there to connect with young people who may need advice or guidance, so there’s something for everyone. It is a really meaningful event for young people to explore all the possibilities for their future career.”
Creative Alliance was one of the exhibitors. Their Director, Noel Dunne commented: “Two of our team were at the show and said it was one of the best events of its kind they’d been to. It was really well organised, well attended and the team were in constant conversations with engaged and well informed young people.”
