APDR – Assess

  • Liaise with parents if there are any changes to vision or updates following hospital visits.
  • Identify changing support needs at transition.
  • Careful monitoring of work output and attainment.
  • Assessment of near and distance vision and functional vision by a Qualified Teacher of the Vision Impaired (QTVI).
  • Assessment of review of needs with curriculum access and attainment.
  • All young people are different, assessment is crucial to identify specific needs in order to ensure that the intervention and support is effective.
  • All visual impairments must be treated on an individual basis as young people use their residual vision differently.
  • Consultation with the child or young person to identify views of any areas of difficulty or changes to their vision. Views also forming a central part of assessment to inform planning.
  • Young people’s strengths and weaknesses will be analysed using enlarged curriculum-related assessment, criterion related assessment and may be supplemented by standardised tests and / or diagnostic tests. These will need to be in the pupil’s print size.
