- Plan and use multi-sensory teaching approaches – multiple senses including hearing, tactile, movement and visual.
- Allow more processing/thinking time.
- Don’t expect the child or young person to be able to listen and copy from the board at the same time.
- Give clear simple and positive instructions and key vocabulary with visual support as necessary.
- Repeat key vocabulary, peer contributions, directions and activities.
- Model and teach active listening.
- Gain pupils’ attention when they are expected to listen and attend.
- Expose pupils to rich and varied language, and display key words along with definitions.
- Use targeted open questions to check understanding.
- Pre and post teach key vocabulary for lessons.
- Provide key information in small chunks to avoid listening fatigue.
